So You're Interested in a City of Sparks Job, Now What?
Apply! Your career search has brought you to our organization and you are interested in one of our jobs. Your first step would be to apply.
We’ll review your application for minimum qualifications first. Be sure to include all of your experience and education information. If you don’t tell us what your qualifications are, how will we know that we’re the perfect match? Please note that the application is a requirement, resumes are not accepted in lieu of an application.
You've Applied - Now You Wait?
This doesn’t sound right, does it? Well, sort of. Some jobs get hired faster than others because of many different reasons. However, we are manually screening your application so the application review is not automatic. Once you’ve submitted your application, the recruiting team will make it a priority to review as soon as you’re next. Be patient, you will hear back from us. If you come across questions – you can always email us, we love talking to applicants and helping them through this process (we’ve all been through it and now how anxious it can be!)
I Still Have Questions
Well, what are they? We're happy to answer them! Are you wondering what test will be or what background means? Check our FAQs on the left hand side to see if that helps and if it doesn’t, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us hrstaff@sparksnv.gov
Applicant FAQs
The City of Sparks only accepts applications for positions that are currently open. You may submit an online application for any of our open positions by going to the "Job Opportunities" page on the left. If you do not have an account, you will need to create a new one. Be sure to update and fill out your application completely in order to give yourself the best opportunity. Applications are only accepted electronically and must be submitted by the time and date indicated on the job announcement. Late submissions are not accepted. If you do not have access to a computer, please contact us and we can help you apply online, in our office.
Unfortunately, no. Any application you submit is attached specifically to the current recruitment you are applying to. You must submit an application for each position you are interested in during the open application period for that position. Your general account, however, will remain active and you will only need to update your application information for any future applications you submit. Once you create an account with our online application system, you only need to update that same account and attach your application to each position you are interested in.
*EXTRA TIP: You have the option of submitting an “interest card” for positions you are interested in that may not be currently open. This enables you to receive notifications for positions you are interested in, once they become open.
Civil Service Examinations can take many forms, depending on the position it is for. The exam may be a written, oral board, physical, training and experience evaluation, practical assessment or any combination.
Upon successful completion of the testing process, the candidate’s name will be placed on an eligibility list ranked by score. Eligibility lists remain in effect for one year and may be extended for up to one year with approval of the Civil Service Commission. When a vacancy occurs, the top candidates for a position are contacted for interview.
Civil Service positions are civil servants who work for a government agency and provide services to the citizens. Because they are defined as such, there is a Civil Service commission tasked with overseeing the merit-based selection system for civil service employees through competitive examinations and interviews.
These positions are not subject to Civil Service Regulations and may or may not go through a testing process. They may or may not require a combination of application screening and additional information consideration.
The background stage for any candidate depends on the position. Candidates being considered for any full-time position may be subject to previous employment verification, reference checks, and other screening criteria, as required by the nature of the position applying to.
Most candidates are contacted via email, throughout the recruitment. Text messages may be sent out to candidates with reminder notices and/or scheduling notices. Please be sure to keep an up-to-date phone number and email address on file for communication purposes.
